Macau : Domestic Exports Value Drops by 17.8%

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that Macao’s total value of exports amounted to MOP1.86 billion in June 2007, down by 10.8% over the same month of 2006. Among this, the value of domestic exports dropped by 17.8% to MOP1.26 billion, while the value of re-exports increased by 9.1% to MOP595 million.
Total value of imports amounted to MOP3.62 billion, up by 9.5% year-on-year. A trade deficit of MOP1.76 billion was recorded for June 2007.
During the period of January-June 2007, the value of total exports dropped by 7.8% year-on-year to MOP9.54 billion, of which the value of domestic exports fell by 19.9% whereas the value of re-exports rose by 24.8%.
Meanwhile, the value of imports grew by 15.6% to MOP20.09 billion, bringing about a trade deficit of MOP10.55 billion. The exports/imports ratio decreased from 59.6% in the first six months of 2006 to 47.5% in the same period of 2007.
In the first six months of 2007, the value of Textile & garment exports, which accounted for 63.4% of the total exports, decreased by 21.9% over the same period of 2006; however, the value of Non-textile exports rose by 34.4%, of which Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear surged by 95.8% and 34.6% respectively.
The USA and the EU remained the major destinations of Macao’s exports, together making up 57.0% of the total value of exports. In the first six months of 2007, the value of exports to the USA andthe EU decreased by 22.0% and 19.3% year-on-year.
In the first six months of 2007, Macao’s total value of imports grew by 15.6% year-on-year, with increases registered in the value of imports of, by broad economic categories, Capital goods (+45.6%), Consumer goods (+14.5%) and Raw materials & semi-manufactures (+0.2%).
Moreover, Macao’s main suppliers of imported goods still concentrated in the Asian region. The value of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong, comprising 52.5% of the total, rose by 9.7% and 12.8% respectively year-on-year.
